It's an ingredient. The tricky thing about baking in comparison to other cooking is that... if you're making for example soup, you can kinda improvise and say, "I don't want potato, I'll use carrots" or "I want beef broth instead of chicken broth." But with baking, you have to follow the recipe exactly. Butter is a critical ingredient in cakes and most sweets, but no one knows how to make it...

If I gave you all the ingredients, you could make her an angel food cake with some canned fruit on the side. Peaches, actually. I'd been saving them. They're sweet, and they come with that syrup stuff.
